The in-vitro synergism of ceftizoxime and tobramycin was examined in 29 isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Ceftizoxime and tobramycin had a synergistic effect against all strains of Ps. aeruginosa for both bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity. The combination of 0.06 mg/l of tobramycin and 8 mg/l of ceftizoxime inhibited 86% of the strains and was bactericidal for 70%. The activity of ceftizoxime and tobramycin alone or in combination in the treatment of artificially induced urinary tract infection in mice was also studied. The effect of combined ceftizoxime and tobramycin was not significantly better than that of tobramycin alone in the treatment of urinary tract infection produced in mice by two selected Ps. aeruginosa strains.
