Abstrakt: A prospective, randomized, single-blind comparison of ceftizoxime and cefamandole was conducted in 53 adult patients hospitalized with pneumonia or purulent tracheobronchitis. Twenty-nine of 31 patients treated with ceftizoxime and 15 of 16 patients treated with cefamandole achieved clinical cure. Both antibiotics were well tolerated. The adverse reactions were all minor and did not require discontinuation of therapy in any patient. None of the patients developed a pulmonary suprainfection during therapy with either drug. In this random trial ceftizoxime was as effective as cefamandole for the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
