Abstrakt: A study has been made of the therapeutic activity of an adamantane spiro compound previously shown to have a prophylactic effect under similar conditions. Volunteers were inoculated with influenza A/England/42/72 and treated with spiroamantadine 60 mg twice daily or placebo, starting 46 h after virus inoculation. Clinical reactions, titres of virus shed in nasal washings and serum antibody responses were assessed. Clinical effects were mild and no significant symptomatic improvement could be associated with drug therapy. However, the titre of virus in nasal washings declined significantly more rapidly in the drug-treated group than in the placebo controls. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
