In a double-blind multi-centre trial conducted in general practice, cephalexin and ampicilhin were compared in the treatment of acute and chronic bronchitis. The dose for both antibiotics was 500 mg 4 times daily for 10 days. One hundred and eleven patients were assessed clinically by their physician at fixed intervals during treatment. Patients also subjectively assessed their improvement at each visit. Clinical and subjective assessments indicated that the two treatments were equally effective, with a similar swift and satisfactory response (recovery or marked improvement) in 91% of patients taking cephalexin and 96% taking ampicillin. Side effects were mild, and comparable in number and type with each therapy [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
