Abstrakt: When the disc diffusion method is used to assess antibiotic sensitivity, a build-up of bacterial growth is sometimes seen at the edge of the inhibition zone. The significance of the phenomenon, considered in some hospital laboratories to be evidence of resistance, has been investigated. Strain sensitivity was reflected by the size of the inhibition zone; the form of the growth around the edge appeared to be immaterial. With many strains, ridges of growth did not appear consistently or reproducibly. The effect could be produced in the absence of any antibiotic [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
