Interviews with 140 elderly medical patients revealed that the measured 22% prevalence of mental impairment was not reflected in the patients' utilization of mental health servicesor in their presenting complaints to their physicians. Subsequent interviews with their physicians revealed inadequate recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of these problems and no referrals to mental health professionals. Discussion concerns the need for increased and continuing medical education in geropsychiatry. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
