Abstrakt: | This paper examines the family life cycle and its bearing on the social participation patterns of older adults. A carefully controlled sample of 60 respondents representative of three different life-cycle stages was subjected to analysis. The findings yield no significant relationship between life-cycle stage and either formal or informal patterns of social participation. Subsequent analysis revealed a significant correlation between the number of primary contacts in formal organizational settings and participation scores, suggesting the importance of primary relational ties with respect to participation patterns. Riesman's typology is referenced to partially account for the rather paradoxical findings of the present research. Social participation is seen as a function of the interrelationship between primary relational needs and contextual availability. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
