One of the most difficult issues in undertaking research with older people is how to obtain valid informed consent from participants. Of 470 nursing home residents asked to participate in a nonrisk study, 406 (86.8%) agreed. The high rates of consent are attributed to the perception of the significance of the research for this population, the presentation format, and the absence of real risk or physical pain. Discussed are the presentation process and the reasons for the difference in consent rates between those obtained from residents and those obtained from families. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
