The article focuses on a study that describes techniques and materials developed at Project Pryme, New York City, and provides genetic counseling services for families of low socioeconomic status who have members with sickle cell disease and trait. In this study, 39 families have been invited to schedule genetic counseling appointments with a child with HbS/S disease. It was observed that among the individuals counseled at Project Pryme, the term trait has virtually no meaning. In addition, genetic counseling for sickle cell disease can reduce or remove anxiety once the results of the hemoglobin electrophoresis are known and understood. |
