Abstrakt: The article presents a study that analyzed the diets of infants of low income families in New York City, New York, to determine daily intake of calories and nutrients. The survey was made on the feeding practices and eating behavior of 451 randomly selected infants attending the child health stations of the New York City Department of Health. A comparison of food intake of the sample population with the recommended dietary allowances indicates a serious deficiency in iron intake in all the groups. Upon examination of the food groups from which the calories are derived suggest the increase in consumption of empty calories. Also, variations in feeding pattern according to ethnic origin are discussed.
