Abstrakt: Technological Innovation is a demanding task due to the substantial risks associated with the technology development and commercialisation process. The sources of risk are diverse and include technical, financial, organisational and commercial factors. Current methods to support the management of Technological Innovation focus on the management of technical risk; this focus can lead to a failure to address the wider sources of risk that impact upon developing a technology for commercial success. This paper advocates a 'systems approach' to the management of Technological Innovation, whereby a wide range of risk factors are assessed throughout the technology development lifecycle. The paper introduces the concept of a Self-Assessment Tool to implement the 'systems approach' and support management of the broad risks that can arise throughout the technology development process.
