The article explores the evolution of names in India. Three decades ago, children's names had cultural, religious, social and economic affiliations. Children were named after their parents, grandparents or gods. According to sociologist Chandan Gowda, names have evolved to escape community identities. Parents now will consider whether their children's names can be pronounced by foreigners. |
