The microstrip reflectarray is rapidly becoming an attractive alternative solution to the traditional parabolic reflector antenna due to its various advantages, such as its high gain, narrow beam with low side lobes, light weight, and smaller volume. In this article, a microstrip reflectarray consisting of a hexagonal patch with crossed slots as the cell elements printed on a conductor-backed substrate is proposed to replace the traditional parabolic reflector antenna. Using this type of cell element, the simulated results of the microstrip reflectarray demonstrate a radiation efficiency of over 60% at 12.5 GHz and a gain of over 26 dBi at 12-13.7 GHz. The experimental results show good agreement with the simulated ones, confirming the validity of the approach presented herein. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
