Flood hazard has long been recognized as one of the most recurring, wide-spread and disastrous natural hazards. In many parts of the Indian subcontinent, flooding reaches catastrophic proportions during monsoon season. For centuries, floods in the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and the Godavari basins have brought number of disasters to the inhabitants in the flood plains apart from inundating large tracts of fertile land (Kale, 1998).
