A substantial literature exists on human resource management practices in large firms, but little has been done to help managers of small firms. Yet, small firms account for the majority of the U.S. workforce and net new jobs created. By understanding the use of HRM practices in small firms, HRM practitioners and small business managers can make a difference in the performance of small firms. This study investigates the use of two types of HRM practices - bureaucratic and high commitment - in firms with 100 or fewer employees. Bureaucratic practices increase with firm size, but high commitment practices have the most positive impact on firm performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
