The article uses case examples to identify situations that could increase a family physician's liability and suggests ways to reduce malpractice risk. It discusses the four findings needed to win a medical malpractice case and describes five high-risk diagnostic errors that commonly lead to lawsuits, including lung cancer, appendicitis and myocardial infarction. Effective communication with the patient and careful documentation of diagnoses, prescriptions and referrals is emphasized. |
