Abstrakt: In the paper presented is an action plan to create a computer-based tool for interactive simulation of lathe operation. The assumptions concerning a virtual environment are presented; the environment being functionally associated with the tool and the way to create computer-generated objects is described; the objects are forming complete metal shop working environment. The environment created that way in Quest software made it possible to undertake a number of actions (that are underway now) related with the environment development, in order to enable an interaction between its individual elements and to interface a number of pieces of peripheral equipment [i.e. data gloves, head mounted display (HMD) and tracking system] to the tool under construction. This way a tool will have been built that makes use of virtual reality technology in order to conduct real time research oriented at accident situations encountered while operating lathes. The tool will enable educational and training processes aimed at future lathe operators to be enriched and will provide the opportunity to operate interactively a virtual lathe. It will also make it possible for the trainee to participate personally and in non-traumatic way in pre-arranged accident situations and will give an opportunity to present such situations in the most realistic manner.
