An adaptive learning system provides learning content customized to a student΄s needs and characteristics, such as in terms of knowledge level, preferences, and learning style. Individualization is essential for improved learning experiences. Here we propose such an adaptive learning system based on ontologies that can assemble highly personalized learning content from implied inter-ontology relationships, resulting in a seamless linking to a more enhanced self-directed learning environment. A prototype was developed for a biology content domain used by second-grade students in Korea.
