The article provides information about various books related to operations research. The book "Symposium on Monte Carlo Methods," edited by Herbert A. Meyer, is made from the papers presented at the Symposium on Monte Carlo Methods held at the University of Florida in March 1954. These papers cover latest techniques for reducing variance, as well as investigations of methods of producing random numbers, and provide some good examples of the proper use of aleatory methods in computing. Another book "The Theory of Games and Linear Programming," by S. Vajda, provides an introduction to game theory and linear programming. Among other things, the book covers the statement of the game problem, the proof of the minimax theorem, the statement of the linear programming problem, the simplex method of computation, the duality theorem, the dual simplex computing procedure, the method of leading variables, and the problem of degeneracy. Geometric interpretations of game and linear-programming problems are provided. The book "Statistics for Management," treats those topics usually found in a textbook on elementary statistics, and attempts to sell statistics to the reader. The emphasis is placed upon the value of statistics to management: why, where, and how certain methods can be used, and what they can do to aid management, rather than upon the methods themselves. The discussions are non-technical and present a broad view of topics with the aim of helping managers to recognize statistical problems in administration. |
