This chapter describes the taxonomic placement, physiology, and biogeography of marine obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (OHCB) from the genus Oleispira. A pure culture of the strain RB-8(T) representing the genus and species Oleispira antarctica within Gammaproteobacteria was obtained in 2000, and was characterized physiologically and phylogenetically with the formal taxonomic description in 2003. These motile curved rods grow very poorly on acetate and pyruvate, which seemingly are the only substrates of non-hydrocarbon origin to be used by Oleispira as the source of carbon and energy. Unlike many other OHCB, Oleispira prefers life in the cold, the feature that has stimulated a series of studies on the molecular basis of its psychrophily, which is also discussed in this chapter.
