Below we examine the strengths and weaknesses of imaging modalities for diagnosis in the pelvis. Ultrasound: Among its strengths, transvaginal ultrasound has high diagnostic accuracy for pelvic pathology. It is the first-line imaging modality for pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and follow-up for previously detected abnormality (e.g., hemorrhagic cyst). If the study is negative in the setting of pelvic pain, the yield of further diagnostic studies is low, but definitive diagnosis can be made in a minority of patients (Harris et al. 2000). Transpelvic ultrasound is less sensitive than transvaginal ultrasound, but is also a first line imaging modality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
