The celiac plexus or solar plexus is an intricate meshwork of nerves in the abdomen. The celiac plexus lies inferior to the celiac artery at the L1 vertebral level. It may also be located at or above the superior mesenteric artery origin. It lies behind the stomach and omentum. It is also anterior to the crura of the diaphragm. It drapes anterolaterally over the aorta on both sides. The celiac plexus is composed of preganglionic splanchnic nerve endings, sensory fibers from the splenic nerve, preganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the vagus nerve, and postganglionic nerve fibers emanating into the viscera. The celiac plexus block would involve afferent nociceptive nerves fibers from most of the viscera of the abdomen (Figs. 4.1 and 4.2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
