Abstrakt: The article examines changes in European attitudes towards sodomy between the 16th and 18th centuries. It is suggested that before 1700, men were viewed as naturally desiring both women and adolescent males, both of whom were seen as sexually passive. According to the author, sexual relationships between women may also have been structured by age. Details on the development of a male homosexual subculture after 1700 and on the association of male same-sex sexuality with effeminacy are presented. Depictions of same-sex relationships in art, theater, and literature are also discussed.
