Abstrakt: Dilute aqueous suspensions of polystyrene-based latex particles of various charge numbers and diameters were studied by microscopy. The interparticle spacing (2Dexp) in the ordered regions was determined with the aid of an image data analyzer. The 2Dexp values were again smaller than the average spacing from concentration (2D0). Furthermore 2Dexp was smaller for more highly charged particles at a constant diameter. These observations confirmed our previous claim that there exists an electrostatic attraction between colloidal particles through the intermediary of counterions and the attraction becomes stronger with increasing number of charges of the particles. The interparticle spacing was calculated according to the theory of Sogami [J. Chem. Phys. 81, 6320 (1984)]. A close agreement was obtained for relatively low charge number particles when the fraction of the free counterions (f) was assumed to be about the same as that found by the transference experiments [J. Chem. Phys. 82, 5732 (1985)], but the agreement was not satisfactory for high charge number particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
