Morphology of the ground state of a model five-atom system.

Abstrakt: An expansion in harmonic-oscillator basis sets and a convenient generalized Talmi–Moshinsky transformation are used to extract the wave function of the ground state in a quantum-mechanical five-boson cluster interacting pairwise through central soft-core potentials. The wave function, in turn, is manipulated through specially defined density functions to reveal the structures and spatial configurations favored in the system. The bipyramidal shape wins slightly over the square pyramid. In addition, the first ‘‘pictures’’ of constituent-particle movement within this microsystem are obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
