Abstrakt: Diaphragm pacing is new technology that can be an alternative or adjunctive therapy to positive pressure ventilation. An electrical stimulus is delivered to surgically implanted electrodes that cause diaphragm contraction. Currently, diaphragm pacing is used in patients who have spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Pacing has both physical and social advantages in both patient populations. Unique to the spinal cord patients, pacing provides a sense of freedom and independence. In the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis population pacing is one of the few therapies shown to prolong survival. The implantation procedure has been shown to be safe. Care and use of the device is easily learned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
