Presents a study which examined the use the double cleavage drilled compression fracture mechanics specimen to obtain crack velocity data for vitreous silica in vacuum conditions at temperatures of 100 and 300 K. Way that the measured fracture rate dependence with applied stress was modeled; Data incorporated into an anelastic fracture model; Suggestion made from the interpretation of silicate glass fracture; Limitation to the design of highly reliable silica-based optical fiber cables. |
