In this critique of Samuel Huntington's book The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of the World Order, Professor Seizaburo Sato, IIPS research director, says that the world order of the twenty-first century should be seen in terms of the fundamental features of modernization, such as industrialization and nationalism, rather than, as Huntington argues, in terms of differences between culture-based civilizations. He says Huntington ignores the positive and revitalizing effects that may result from encounters between different civilizations, and overestimates the meaning of the end of the Cold War. Sato suggests that an identity crisis within individuals is the essence of inter-civilizational clash in the contemporary world. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
