Abstrakt: An attempt was made to compare the backgrounds o/, and sanctions received by, two full population samples of female (n = 147) and male (n =243) disciplinary offenders from same-sex institutions. Demographic differences existed between the two samples. For both sexes, however, offense frequency was greatest during th efirst year, insubordination accounted for about one-third of all offenses, and non-whites were significantly more assaultive. When controlling for offense severity, females received significantly less severe punishment in most of the offense categories. The impact of type of plea on punishment was examined and an interpretation made about the differential sanctioning. Several policy recommendations are offered. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
