The Teatro Solís in Montevideo (Uruguay) is the oldest continuously operating opera house in the Americas. Inaugurated in 1856 with Verdi's Ernani, it soon became part of the South American circuit of grand theatres and a major stop for touring opera companies. Over nearly one and a half centuries it has served as Uruguay's premier theatre and it has been visited by world-renowned figures such as Adelina Patti, Arturo Toscanini, Enrico Caruso, Richard Strauss, Artur Rubinstein, and Vaslav Nijinsky. Despite its unquestionable historical significance, the Solís still lacked a comprehensive study to assess its role in Uruguayan culture and its place in the history of Western opera. Uruguayan-born musicologist Susana Salgado has attempted to meet that need in her book, the first English account of the musical history of this famed Latin American opera house.
