Abstrakt: In this article the concept of ethnicity is fully explicated and attention is drawn to the way in which the South African government uses “ethnicity” to legitimize its continuing hegemony. The major component of the article is a comparative survey of black university students on the theme of ethnic identification. A major finding is that students predominantly identify with a South African or African identity — in preference to ethnic identity. In addition, the author also explores the reality of multiple loyalties in the South African context. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
