The responsibilities of further and higher educational institutions for teaching, research and the diffusion of knowledge are highlighted. A model of the major elements involved in the diffusion and application of research‐based knowledge is developed. A joint problem‐solving approach (involving collaboration between industry and university) that is designed to train postgraduate students and to help industrial organisations to innovate and solve problems more efficiently is described within the context of the model. The benefits of industry‐university collaboration and areas where the process of knowledge utilisation might be further improved are examined and four key areas are identified.
