Abstrakt: A group intervention for single-mothers living on government assistance was evaluated using a single-group pretest-posttest design with a one-year followup. The sample consisted of 90 program graduates, representing 75% of the women who completed the 14-week group program. The data revealed that program graduates made substantial gains in individual competencies immediately following the program and one-year later. Subjects also showed reduced life conditions stress and improved mental health at followup. However, the linkage between short and long-term goals was not supported. The results are discussed in terms of future research needs and the hypothesized relationship between poverty and mental health. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
