Using cognitive strategies in the prewriting, composition, revision, and editing phases of writing can improve the quality of the product and the ease with which the writing is produced. The computer appears to be one of the most promising tools to help students learn this skill. Specific software is suggested for each phase, as well as for classroom publishing. The computer can create conditions for the writing process that are at a higher level than authors otherwise enjoy, and it can give teachers greater opportunity to guide students at more formative stages of the writing process.
