This study examined the efforts of 3 experienced teachers (one special education & 2 kindergarten) over the course of a year as they implemented an inclusive kindergarten program that involved children who are deaf and hard of hearing. A mixed methodological design involving naturalistic inquiry and qualitative data was employed. Data sources included teacher reports and nonparticipant classroom observations. Analysis was performed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Further, a context evaluation comparison was applied to obtained data for the purpose of examining practices reported and used by the teachers against standards and guidelines recommended by professional organizations. Seventy-three teacher responsibility statements were drawn from 2 sets of professional guidelines. These statements were compared to the obtained data, revealing that the 2 kindergarten teachers addressed 51% of the statements while the special education teacher addressed 71%. Implications for designing and implementing inclusive kindergarten programs are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
