It is the purpose of this article to examine the relationship of television viewing to reading and pre‐reading skills. A number of research studies are cited, both positively and negatively correlating televiewing with reading and pre‐reading skills. After examining the research relating television watching and reading, alternative suggestions are given which may be used by parents and teachers to encourage reading readiness, and means of incorporating children's Television experience into reading related activities are suggested.
