Abstrakt: This paper utilizes the authors’ research from nineteen communities to examine the extent to which the rural‐urban typology makes useful distinctions for the conduct of research and development. Rural and urban communities are found to be similar with regard to the nature of community relationships and patterns of individual leadership. Differences exist in the areas of the leadership pool, community power structures, leader and citizen orientations, and effective approaches to community development. Implications for community research and development activities are drawn from the similarities and differences discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
