Abstrakt: This article is based on the results of a recent study about the socialisation of young children within Moroccan families in the Netherlands. It describes the strategies mothers employ in educating their young children. The mothers both want their children to get ahead within the Dutch educational system and also to preserve their mother tongue and culture. How this influences their educational practices and choices appears to vary with their parental goals, conceptions of what and how children should learn and minority-majority relations, especially within the context of schooling.
