Abstrakt: The main purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the pragmatic aspects of the speech of mothers addressing their 5- and 6-year-old children are dependent on cultural factors. Two variables are considered: the mother's cultural origin (France or Quebec) and the mother's child-rearing style (coercive or inductive). Twenty 15-min dialogues were videotaped. Quantitative measures (number of speaking tums, utterances, and speech acts) and qualitative measures (type of speech act) were analyzed. The results indicate important differences between the Quebecois and French mothers: the Quebecois mothers spoke more than French mothers and the Quebecois mothers produced a greater number of assertive and expressive speech acts than did the French mothers. The result also show that the speech used in both of these cultural groups varies according to the mother's child-rearing style: The coercive mothers spoke more than inductive ones. The data comparing the speech of the mothers to that of the children are interpreted in terms of the social status in relation to the adult rather than in terms of reproduction of the adult model. The data also suggest that the child's own activity is highly important to language acquisition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
