Abstrakt: Work therapy programs are designed to provide pa- tients with physical, psychological, and financial benefits. Twenty- three participants in a nursing home work therapy program were interviewed regarding their perceptions. Ninety percent reported in- creased self-esteem as a result of having a job. The majority be- lieved their work contributed to the general community. Participants with jobs requiring a high degree of contact with other residents were more likely to report sitive feelings than participants with non-contact jobs. Many o f t I? e workers reported little interest in the personal or structured leisure activities available in the facility. The therapeutic effects of productive work among elderly nursing home residents are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
