While the goals of an acquisitions department may not be the same as those of a libray materials vendor, they share similar objectives. An acquisitions department must place orders for as many requests as possible, obtain items quickly and economically, and provide additional information through the maintenance of statistics and records. To be successful vendors must fill a reasonable percentage of orders quickly and at a competitive price while providing additional customer services. If acquisitions and vendors do share similar objectives, can the criteria used to evaluate vendor performance be applied to the evaluation of acquisitions functions? This article will address the question by reviewing guides to and studies of vendor performance in an attempt to determine which criteria could be applicable to the evaluation of acquisitions.
