Abstrakt: This study explored the use of social science research information as an input to policy formulation and decision making in a state department of corrections. Interviews of administrators and research personnel were combined with collateral evidence to examine levels and types of use and to identify factors associated with utilization. Research use was found to be minimal but somewhat surprising in terms of diversity. Analysis of the data led to the conclusion that certain structural variables and variables associated with bureaucratic decision making are crucial to an understanding of use and to the development of a viable model of the utilization process.
