Since the early 1970s, expressions such as the information economy, society, industries, professions, and workers have been quite popular in scientific, political, and media discourses. Because few people are really familiar with the scientific principles and research that gave rise to these terms, they are employed to qualify highly diverse and often contradictory realities or activities. The purpose of this article is to summarize the characteristics, analyze the limitations, and explore the future prospects of research dealing with the information macroeconomy.
