This article is the product of a doctoral level social welfare policy class of clinical social work students, facilitated by an experienced social policy teacher. The central concern was a mutual exploration of the many ways social welfare policy and clinical social work overlap despite a history of separation and an ongoing struggle to achieve a balance between these two different arenas of the profession. Two examples of how an integration between policy and clinical practice can be promoted in the classroom are discussed: 1) The many ways social welfare policy shapes the conditions of practice, and 2) how institutional sexism, as an example of social oppression, and the threat of social annihilation shape the experiences and treatment issues of clients.
