Abstrakt: The end of the Cold War has afforded the rare opportunity to assess the role of the military in a changing world and to fundamentally restructure armed forces in line with those changes. In his discussion of these roles and structures as they affect United States forces in particular, Admiral Miller focuses on strategies and organisation, highlighting the core competencies concept and especially joint forces aspects—in packages, training, command and doctrine. He concludes that the role of the military in the emerging international order is both as sword and plowshare, in both maintaining defence and working towards peace and stability in an increasingly complex world.
