The concept of sustainable development has achieved wide acceptance in recent years, and there is an emerging consensus on how it may be achieved. In 1986 UNEP launched the EMINWA programme with the aim of promoting an environmentally sound approach to the management of freshwater resources on a basinwide scale. Three phases are envisaged for each regional programme: a diagnostic study, the preparation of an action plan, and the funding of projects. UNEP aims to develop at least one action plan for each of six types of inland water system, concentrating initially on Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
