Abstrakt: Researchers suggest that children learn to take from texts through interactive book reading experiences. This would suggest that parents model behaviors, like questioning, while reading books. The transcripts of 9 mother/child dyads from the Harvard Home-School Study of Language and Literacy Development were examined for evidence of question-asking by both members of the dyad. Few questions were asked by either mother or child. Although modeling cannot be ruled out as a way that children learn to take from text, this sample does not support the hypothesis that children learn to ask questions from parental modeling.
