Abstrakt: The Coast Guard under Title 33, Chapter I, of the Code of Federal Regulations is designated to provide sound signals as aids to navigation. Cannons and bells were the first types of sound to be used. Through the years the sounds have changed. A tape recording of most of the sounds through the evolutionary years will be played. Some of these sounds are more readily accepted by the public than others. The Coast Guard is trying to provide the most pleasing sounds with the least amount of 'noise pollution' from each signal, while providing the maximum signal necessary to the mariner. A summary of the noise control efforts being used in aids to navigation will be presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
