Abstrakt: In 1980, Judith R. Walkowitz challenged dominant Victorian constructions of the prostitute figure as victimised and lacking in agency, offering instead a reading that emphasised autonomy and independence as reflected in acts of resistance to the Contagious Diseases Acts in Plymouth and Southampton. Evidence from Kent suggests that levels of non-compliance were not generally high there however, and that the majority of registered women in the county complied with the law most of the time. It is argued that these findings are not, however, inconsistent with the project to recast women's roles in history in terms of agency. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
