Abstrakt: Laboratory measurements of the sound speed and attenuation in natural sea-floor sediments have shown that the speed ranges from 0.997 to 1.19 that in sea water, and that the attenuation is directly proportional to frequency over the range of the measurements (15-1500 kHz. Values of the attenuation coefficient range from 0.7 dB/ft at 15 kHz for silty-clay sediment to 75 dB/ft at 1500 kHz for sand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
